Bossa Fish brings restaurant and seafood market to Elizabeth
TThe idea for Bossa Fish – a seafood restaurant and fresh fish market in Elizabeth – comes from Napa, California. Co-owners Philip Carvalho and Joe Licata dined at a place where customers ordered their food and drinks at the counter; then took their meal to dine indoors or outdoors. Bossa Fish recreates this while bringing fresh seafood to central and north Jersey.
“We were able to merge whatever we wanted into our concept,” says Philip. “We saw the space and felt good,” he says of a 1,700 square foot venue. Philip was born in Elizabeth and now resides with his wife and children in Jersey City. Before the restaurant, he ran a showroom for a Brazilian fashion company. Her father immigrated from Brazil and her mother’s parents came from Portugal to New Jersey. (The flavors of both countries are reflected in Bossa Fish’s dishes.) In addition, his grandparents ran a restaurant in Brazil. His father also ran a Newark-based food truck and owned a restaurant in Rahway. So despite his background in fashion, Philip is no stranger to restaurants.

Bossa Fish can seat around 20 people inside, as well as 40 in front of the restaurant under heat lamps. Inside, “the vibe is very sleek and modern, but has elements of beautiful Portuguese artwork,” according to Philip. In fact, the word “Bossa” is an old-fashioned Brazilian slang term; it means doing something with a special charm, natural flair, or innate ability. For example, tables display wines and olive oils while hand-painted murals adorn the walls.
Seafood is of course the star of the menu. A popular entree – and Philip’s favorite item – is the salt cod croquettes; but other popular entrees include the shrimp croquettes and the shrimp in garlic sauce. Likewise, popular sandwiches include “Charlie Baltimore” (crab cake) and “305” (with plaice, shrimp or cod). Plus, Philip says Friday’s special of the day, a grilled octopus platter, still sells. Other iconic dishes include Bossa Nova, a sandwich with a choice of plaice, shrimp, scallops, cod or whiting; as well as the Bossa combo, a fried plate with shrimp, scallops and plaice. Meanwhile, mouthwatering desserts include banana pudding and custard.
Bossa Fish also offers a large scale fish market. They sell shrimp, scallops, salmon, red snapper, porgy, branzino, cod, flounder and more. There are also a variety of sauces and seasonings for sale. Customers can then take their seafood home or let Bossa Kitchen cook it to their liking.
