One of my favorite things about working in downtown Biloxi is walking to breakfast at Greenhouse Biloxi.

The pink building has a sign in the window that says “everyone”, letting customers know immediately that they are welcome. This is the first thing I noticed when I first decided to dine there a few months ago.

The cafe and cookie restaurant looks like a Disney fairy tale that could be set in New Orleans. Exposed brickwork, high ceilings, and poetry on the walls make the greenhouse feel like a best-kept secret to Big Easy locals.

Sorry, NOLA, because Biloxi is saving this one for us.

There was a considerable queue during the hour I was in Greenhouse on Thursday, and the staff knew almost everyone who came through the door by name. The coffee selection is simple, and the star of the show are the specialty cookies.

There’s a sweet and savory option every day, and you can try both with a side of fruit or Zapps Voodoo chips for under $9. I ordered the sweet – a molasses ginger cookie stuffed with sweet fluff and roasted cinnamon apples – and the savory – a pumpkin parmesean cookie stuffed with regular fluff and roasted kale.

I chose fruit for my side and loved that the greenhouse served my meal in a real plate and silverware. The company is also environmentally conscious. Their take-out boxes and cups are compostable.

The sweet cookie tasted like apple pie, but better. The tart green apples were a perfect complement to the light fluff and molasses of the cookie. The cracker was my favorite – the cheesy pumpkin flavor was not overshadowed by the kale, which was the perfect consistency. It almost looked like a new-age version of green bean casserole at Thanksgiving, and I loved it.

Greenhouse Biloxi also sells cookies, pastries and baked goods, sandwiches, salads, lunch plates and more. The menu is vast and there is something for everyone, even the pickiest.

The greenhouse also serves as a sort of bodega for downtown Biloxi. If coffee or tea isn’t your thing, they also have a variety of sodas, sparkling water, and fresh juices that you can take home or to the office.

Don’t forget to check out the art along the wall – local artists are selling their creations and there are several featured in the holiday gallery.

  • Mullets is now in the franchise business, with a first opening in early 2023.
  • Uptown of Ankeny becomes the first.
  • Breakfast, cocktails, rooftop terrace and more are expected.

Mullets, Des Moines’ roadhouse restaurant with breakfast fare and a penchant for all things business up front, party in back, is on the move. The restaurant with hour-long weekend queues and framed photos of sports stars with mules plans to open in downtown Ankeny at SW Third Street and SW Maple Street.

If all goes according to plan, it will mark the first franchise for the cheeky restaurant, owner John Royer said. “We are known for our great breakfast and great breakfast drinks.”

Tim Kovacevich, owner of Kippy’s Place in Elkhart, is opening the restaurant, which will feature the same menu. Royer said this location plans to offer hours later a rooftop patio and bands in the building being built from the ground up near the High Trestle Trail. Construction is expected to be complete by December and Mullets will open in January or February 2023.

After:The 33 Must-Try Restaurants in Des Moines

Royer, who bought Mullets from Des Moines Full Court Press restaurateurs in 2016, also co-owns The Chicken, the roadside restaurant that serves Full Court Press’s Southern chicken dishes in what was once Orilla, just off the Great Western Trail.

Mullet nachos are just one of the dishes on the restaurant menu facing the Parc Principal.

By the end of 2022, Royer said he will have five new Mullets franchises signed and 10 total in the works. Waukee, Waterloo and Ames can all expect their own versions of the restaurant, he said.

After:Casey’s breakfast pizza turns 21 with a Busch Light beer cheese ‘bizza’ to celebrate

The original Mullets at 1300 SE First St. in Des Moines, across the river from Principal Park – home of the Iowa Cubs minor league baseball team – offers breakfast items such as eggs Benedict, baked pizza, omelettes, salmon hash browns and the morning mullet with two eggs and hash browns served on a half order of cookies and gravy.

Anna’s house arrives in Milford.

The famous Michigan restaurant chain known for its breakfasts will open its 10e location in the former Hector & Jimmy’s building at the north end of the village early next year.

“When you look at Milford, it looks like a community that will support our brand, and we appreciate having this service as part of their community,” said Tim Fatum, Director of Business Practices for Anna’s House.

Fatum spoke by phone from Grand Rapids, where the restaurant that also serves breakfast opened in 2003. In 2005, it was purchased by Joshua Beckett, who opened a second location in Grand Rapids and in 2012, his restaurant was named Michigan’s Best Breakfast by MLive. . Over the past eight years, the chain has opened eight more restaurants, including those in Westland and Ann Arbor. A Farmington Hills site closed during the pandemic.

After a short stint in Regency, a delivery-focused breakfast has resurfaced in the city.

AM Kitchen Co. opened in late August inside the local outpost of ghost kitchen chain CloudKitchens at 2812 W. Broad St. on the southern tip of Scott’s Addition.

AM Kitchen Co. is fashioning itself a kind of food hall based on delivery, with food from six in-house restaurant brands, including Da Best Damn Breakfast, The Flapjack Hut and Breakwich, as well as a seventh licensed brand MrBeast Burger.

Although primarily focused on delivery, AM Kitchen offers takeout from Scott’s Addition through its own online ordering system.

Curtiss Stancil

Owner Curtiss Stancil said he was the first tenant to open in the CloudKitchens space. The ghost kitchen chain was created by Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick. An entity related to its parent company bought the Broad Street property last year and renovated it.

CloudKitchens opens shadow kitchens and then rents them out to delivery and takeout-only restaurants. Stancil said he was renting about 500 square feet in the Scott’s Addition space. He said he invested around $35,000 to $40,000 to launch his outpost there and the space came with hardware already included.

The Scott’s Addition store is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The location is the second location for AM Kitchen Co., adding to its original location at 9545 Amberdale Drive, a space that also features a dining area.

The Scott’s Addition location replaces AM Kitchen’s short-lived stay in the Regency Mall food court. Stancil was forced to move as the area was closed to make way for an upgrade as part of the mall’s transition to a mixed-use development.

“Because of the food court closing, we had to find a new location and I wanted something central,” Stancil said of the move.

But Stancil isn’t done with Henrico County yet. He is interested in a third location and is looking for another AM Kitchen outpost near the Mall, at Short Pump and around Richmond International Airport.

Stancil also plans to try a more traditional restaurant model with the upcoming Honeychild’s Juke Joint, which is slated to open in October and will operate as a limited-service restaurant in the evenings in the Chesterfield AM Kitchen Co. space.

AM Kitchen launched in 2020 as a pandemic hub after Stancil’s catering company Curtmont Catering saw its business plunge. Now operating as part of AM Kitchen and focused on client businesses, Stancil said Curtmont had rebounded and accounted for about a third of the company’s business.

Bryant “Chef Baul” Williams, who has served as private chef to rappers like Lil Baby, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar as well as filmmaker Tyler Perry, plans to open two new restaurants in downtown Atlanta this fall.

Betty Sue’s all-day breakfast and take-out restaurant Binky’s takes over a former McDonalds and sub-store next to the Summit Cafeteria at Five Points Plaza on Marietta Street. Williams calls the move to downtown Atlanta a “central location for all of my clients.”

Bryant “Chief Baul” Williams.
Bryant “Chief Baul” Williams

At Betty Sue’s

Serving breakfast and brunch all day, Williams named the restaurant after her grandmother. The menu centers around oatmeal bowls topped with oxtails, lobster and shrimp using his personal range of oatmeal. Packets of Chef Baul’s Grits will also be available for purchase at Betty Sue’s. In addition to bowls of oatmeal, expect pancakes, waffles, egg dishes, and vegan options on the menu, plus beer and wine from the bar.

Williams plans to open Betty Sue’s by the end of the year and says the restaurant’s design has a “nice urban, southern look”.

at Binky’s

Paying homage to his father’s nickname, Binky’s will focus primarily on takeout, but is expected to include at least four seats for those wishing to dine after receiving their order. Open for lunch and dinner, the menu features salmon entrees, lamb chops, grilled vegetables, mac and cheese, and fried chicken.

Williams hopes to open Binky’s by the end of September, but certainly before Betty Sue’s opens.

Williams describes her style of cooking as “the soul of the south” infused with flavors from Japan, the Caribbean and European countries. In 2019, Williams opened soul food restaurant Chef’d Up in the Highland Walk Apartment complex at the corner of Highland Avenue and Sampson Street, a space that previously housed Last Word, Cast Iron and The Barrelhouse.

The restaurant closed a year later amid a tenancy dispute with Perennial Properties, the owner of Highland Walk Apartments. The space now houses the Highland Bistro.

An urban breakfast has a new face with its waffle irons.

521 Biscuits & Waffles, the four-year-old restaurant at 521 E. Main St., has been sold to a new owner.

Fredericksburg native Damien Eure is the new owner after buying the business last month from married couple Aaron Bond and María José Mejía Ruiz for an undisclosed amount.

Bond and Mejía Ruiz opened 521 in 2018, offering an exclusively gluten-free menu — an approach Eure said it would keep.

“It will always be 100% gluten-free,” Eure said. “We are going to keep the name and the concept but change the menu. The basic elements that I do not touch at all. »

The main menu change will be to add lunch options, which will come with extended opening hours for the shop.

“Right now, it’s not a place to eat at all. Every time we went (around lunchtime) the doors were closed but there were people waiting to get the food. I said, ‘Dang, if you just open the doors,’ Eure said.

521 Biscuits & Waffles is Eure’s first time owning a business, and he currently has a day job as a power plant operator in Fredericksburg that he keeps.

When he set out to find a restaurant business to acquire, Eure said he was looking for a taqueria, which he was motivated to do after being stationed in California in the late 1990s while in Marine.

“I saw some things in my travels that I wanted to transplant. Howard Schultz with Starbucks, he took what he saw to Italy and brought it to the United States,” Eure said.

The breakfast venue will reopen under new ownership. (Photo by Mike Platania)

“I was looking for a taco shop. The location (521) was perfect for a California style taco shop, but the product was excellent. I’m not gluten free, but I tried it and it was better. I was really impressed. My whole model has been changed.

Bond and Mejía Ruiz were looking to sell 521 cookies and waffles for several reasons, including going through the wringer of the pandemic and their desire to have more time to raise their young children.

“We were just finding that to provide the service we want and make the adjustments we wanted to make would take a lot more attention away from our family,” Bond said.

He added that he and Mejía Ruiz both had full-time jobs while running the restaurant. Bond works as an urban planner with the city, while Mejía Ruiz works for the VCU Massey Cancer Center.

Bond said 521’s clientele has evolved over the years in unexpected ways.

“We were definitely starting to get more and more traffic from the downtown business community. We wanted that to be our primary customer base,” Bond said.

“But we’ve found that we’re actually getting more business from families all over the Richmond area and especially people traveling to Richmond for everything from sports tournaments to shows. We have been blessed by the relationships we have built across the city and the families who have continued to entrust their business to us,” he said.

After taking over the business in late April, Eure ran the shop for a few weeks but has since closed it temporarily to better prepare and bolster its three-person workforce.

“The first two weeks have been eye-opening. The demand is absolutely there,” Eure said, adding that he plans to reopen the store in the coming weeks.

Bond said he and Mejía Ruiz were not ruling out a possible return to the hospitality industry one day.

“I don’t think we’re taking our options away, but right now we’re probably just focusing on our family and enjoying a bit more free time,” he said. “We both work in the city, so we’ll be there. Hopefully, when the time is right and the idea is good, we’ll try our hand at another entrepreneurial project.

As the first phase of his business expansion begins, Joe plans to shuttle back and forth between the two stores, but his right-hand man from the start, Aidan Dimuzio, will serve as general manager in Athens, Georgia. A handful of current employees will also commute as he begins the process of hiring residents of Monroe, Georgia.

“I’ve always intended to expand this business, and now I’m in the right place to start,” said Joe Nedza, “My dream is to own 20 to 30 stores in the next ten years, and that’s is the perfect step in the right direction.”

Nedza’s has confirmed that the restaurant will take over the space that was previously occupied by the Butcher’s Block on S. Broad Street. Customers can check the website for what will be offered. The daily donut flavors will also vary from the original location, but vanilla, strawberry lavender, and chocolate with sprinkles will remain classics.

The new location will essentially be an extension of the original store; compliments will always be the focus of every transaction. There are also plans to work with local artists to paint new murals for display in the new restaurant. Joe Nedza hopes this site can rally the community one compliment at a time.

Eggs Up Grill opened its doors this week in Gastonia.

The South Carolina-based chain opened Monday, January 17 at 2609 S. New Hope Road, in the Food Lion mall at the corner of Redbud Drive and South New Hope Road.

The 4,000 square foot space housed the former Round Bistro, which closed in 2018.

Eggs Up Grill in Gastonia will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week. The restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, and lunch.

This is the first Eggs Up Grill for Gaston County and for Keith Moore and his wife Soumitra. For what it’s worth, Keith Moore was having breakfast at the restaurant on Tuesday morning.

“What drew my wife and I to Eggs Up Grill was how family oriented it is. It’s a place where the family can gather and enjoy breakfast classics,” Moore said in a statement released by the company. “The concept of breakfast and lunch, as well as its opening hours, are very convincing. Also, the brand is community-centric and that’s important to us.

Keith Moore and his wife Soumitra and their two children. The family opened Eggs Up Grill on Monday, January 17, 2022, at the intersection of South New Hope Road and Redbud.

Eggs Up Grill menu items include eggs, hash browns, oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, French toast, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and salads. Eggs Up Grill also serves regular coffee and specialty coffee drinks, as well as mimosas.

The restaurant has enough space for 116 people. The restaurant also has a “community room”, separate from the usual dining room, as well as an outdoor patio that can accommodate up to 24 people.

The dining room has both tables, a bar area and benches.

Moore has worked in the restaurant industry for 15 years, holding various leadership positions within IHOP. Moore has managed 22 IHOP restaurants along the East Coast in one form or another – including IHOP on Cox Road, which the franchisee closed in April 2020. A new franchisee now operates the Gastonia IHOP.

The Moores are interested in opening a new restaurant in Gastonia and believe there is great potential for the future.

Eggs Up Grill wait staff at the Gastonia location on South New Hope Road and Redbud. The restaurant opened its doors on Monday, January 17, 2022.

“Eggs Up Grill’s values along with our return to business in Gastonia at this great location make this a great opportunity,” Moore said.

The Moores have lived in Gastonia for 10 years, though they’ve moved back to town from Spartanburg, South Carolina

The Gastonia restaurant will employ a total of 28 people and is actively recruiting. Interested people can apply at eggupgrill.com or visit the restaurant and ask for the duty manager.
