Chef Gaz Smith to open steak and seafood restaurant in the Blackrock Village Center

Chef and restaurateur Gareth (Gaz) Smith is opening his third restaurant, Michael’s Blackrock, in Blackrock Village Center, south Dublin, where a € 12 million renovation program is nearing completion.

The new restaurant, for which a planning request has been filed for an enclosed outdoor terrace with a retractable roof, will be in the space previously occupied by Clodagh’s Kitchen by Clodagh McKenna and, more recently, Dunne & Crescenzi. It should open in the spring, with May as the target date.

According to Smith, who runs two restaurants in Mount Merrion, Michael’s and Little Mike’s, the menu is in an early stage of development but will follow the seafood and steak model of his other businesses.

Smith has taken on a 15-year lease on the premises, which are undergoing a complete redevelopment. “We’ve turned down 30 spots in the last year, and this is it. All the twists and turns we made during the closures had to pique the interest of the good owners, and we did. We made a very good deal with the owner. We worked on this for six months, ”he says.

The restaurant is located at the front of the shopping center, where SuperValu is the main tenant, and is on two levels, with access from the street as well as from inside the center. “The internal entrance will provide us with a space to do food retail, very similar to what we do in Sutton,” says Smith, referring to his wine and take-out retail space. at Higgins Butchers in Sutton.

The restaurant’s show kitchen will be kept in the dining room and a prep kitchen will be used to prepare lighter meals and snacks for sale during the day.

The development is part of an evolution of the food offer of the shopping center. A Butlers Chocolate Café is slated to open in February, and the centre’s owners, Aviva Life & Pensions Ireland, have applied for planning to convert the old AIB building on the Rock Hill side of the development into a ‘delicatessen’. and food retail emporium for the sale of freshly prepared and hot food for consumption outside, and the incidental use of coffee, including outdoor seating ”.
