Structure fire at Pier 77 seafood restaurant
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG / WECP) – A family-owned and must-see restaurant in Panama City Beach caught fire on Friday.
Pier 77 opened its doors to seafood lovers in 1978 and has been a local family business for over 40 years.
The family also owns a business next door and saw smoke around 10:30 a.m. and called 9-1-1.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, the building was filled with smoke.
“Thomas Drive was the first to find out that a kitchen fire was fully involved and they did a big push and had a big stroke to extinguish the kitchen,” said Panama City Beach Fire Chief Ray Morgan. .
Authorities said the fire started in the kitchen, but how it started is still unknown. Panama City Beach Fire as well as Bay County Fire and even the Navy worked to put out the flames.
“We and the Navy base witnessed the blaze. It made its way through the roof structure – a multi-layered roof, ”Morgan said. “It takes a lot of work to get through it, so we used a lot of manpower to get it through. “
It took about 90 minutes for the crews to put out the fire. No surrounding buildings were damaged and no injuries were reported.
“We all have to work together and we have a great group of local chefs who are committed to making their departments work together and everything is going well,” Morgan said.
A total effort of everyone involved. Including, for the first time in thirty years, the Navy base.
“The naval base is under a new command when it comes to firefighters, so we are working with them to establish a relationship with them on mutual aid and automatic aid,” Morgan said.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire just before noon and the blaze is still under investigation.
“We’ve all had meals here at this restaurant and families come here, so anytime something goes like that it’s personal for us,” Morgan said. as it happens and I’m really proud that everyone is rallying. Great job today by Bay County. “>
