Eggs Up Grill opened its doors this week in Gastonia.

The South Carolina-based chain opened Monday, January 17 at 2609 S. New Hope Road, in the Food Lion mall at the corner of Redbud Drive and South New Hope Road.

The 4,000 square foot space housed the former Round Bistro, which closed in 2018.

Eggs Up Grill in Gastonia will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week. The restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, and lunch.

This is the first Eggs Up Grill for Gaston County and for Keith Moore and his wife Soumitra. For what it’s worth, Keith Moore was having breakfast at the restaurant on Tuesday morning.

“What drew my wife and I to Eggs Up Grill was how family oriented it is. It’s a place where the family can gather and enjoy breakfast classics,” Moore said in a statement released by the company. “The concept of breakfast and lunch, as well as its opening hours, are very convincing. Also, the brand is community-centric and that’s important to us.

Keith Moore and his wife Soumitra and their two children. The family opened Eggs Up Grill on Monday, January 17, 2022, at the intersection of South New Hope Road and Redbud.

Eggs Up Grill menu items include eggs, hash browns, oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, French toast, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, and salads. Eggs Up Grill also serves regular coffee and specialty coffee drinks, as well as mimosas.

The restaurant has enough space for 116 people. The restaurant also has a “community room”, separate from the usual dining room, as well as an outdoor patio that can accommodate up to 24 people.

The dining room has both tables, a bar area and benches.

Moore has worked in the restaurant industry for 15 years, holding various leadership positions within IHOP. Moore has managed 22 IHOP restaurants along the East Coast in one form or another – including IHOP on Cox Road, which the franchisee closed in April 2020. A new franchisee now operates the Gastonia IHOP.

The Moores are interested in opening a new restaurant in Gastonia and believe there is great potential for the future.

Eggs Up Grill wait staff at the Gastonia location on South New Hope Road and Redbud. The restaurant opened its doors on Monday, January 17, 2022.

“Eggs Up Grill’s values along with our return to business in Gastonia at this great location make this a great opportunity,” Moore said.

The Moores have lived in Gastonia for 10 years, though they’ve moved back to town from Spartanburg, South Carolina

The Gastonia restaurant will employ a total of 28 people and is actively recruiting. Interested people can apply at eggupgrill.com or visit the restaurant and ask for the duty manager.

CARTERET – The Carteret Business Partnership recently welcomed The Crab General to the Carteret Mall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Daniel J. Reiman.

After emigrating from China in 2009 and working in the restaurant business for 10 years, Angel Chen chose to open a restaurant in Carteret with a seafood menu and a family atmosphere,

“Angel chose the name Crab General because a general is a leader and she wants to provide leadership when it comes to good food,” Reiman said.

Chen wanted to open in Carteret because the 5,000 square foot space was perfect for his vision of fun, flashy, yet light nautical decor to serve as the backdrop for his menu.

“I wanted to open a seafood restaurant rather than a Chinese restaurant because there are already so many Chinese restaurants, and I felt there was more need for a good seafood restaurant, so there was a bigger market potential,” Chen said. “We want to organize big family celebrations with warmth and good fresh seafood.”

Angel Chen, the owner of the new Crab General, is pictured in the fun setting of her seafood restaurant.

The Crab General’s motto is “Juicy Seafood,” and the restaurant lives up to that motto by getting its dishes “fresh off the boat,” Chen said.

Restaurants: We welcomed and said goodbye to these central Jersey restaurants this year

Open since early November, The Crab General offers a Get Your Hands Dirty clambake-style feast as its signature dish. The three-step meal of at least 1 pound includes green or black mussels ($15 a pound), clams ($13), crawfish ($15), shrimp ($16 head on, $18 head off ), scallops ($30), snow crab legs. ($32) and Dungeness crab, king crab legs, and lobster tail at standard (but fluctuating) market prices. For non-seafood eaters, there are also $10 a pound sausages.

Step two of Get Your Hands Dirty is choosing the seasoning: Cajun, Garlic Butter, Lemon Pepper, and Juicy Special, a mix of all three. Then diners choose their “spicy level”: not spicy, mild, medium, hot or extra hot. The sea-fresh feast comes with corn and potatoes, much like a Maine lobster pot or a Louisiana crawfish boil.

“Business has been good so far,” Chen said. “Customers seem to really like it.”

Crab General's Angel Chen has fun with shark jaws, one of the new restaurant's many entertaining marine and nautical presentations.

The food is matched by entertaining decor, like oversized paintings and sculptures of sea creatures and pirates, displays of rum barrels, ship components, treasures, beach scenes and sea kayaks, four streaming TVs and a psychedelic star show playing on the ceiling. The restaurant also includes a draw at each table for a prize of over $50 or a coupon for a later visit.

TThe idea for Bossa Fish – a seafood restaurant and fresh fish market in Elizabeth – comes from Napa, California. Co-owners Philip Carvalho and Joe Licata dined at a place where customers ordered their food and drinks at the counter; then took their meal to dine indoors or outdoors. Bossa Fish recreates this while bringing fresh seafood to central and north Jersey.

“We were able to merge whatever we wanted into our concept,” says Philip. “We saw the space and felt good,” he says of a 1,700 square foot venue. Philip was born in Elizabeth and now resides with his wife and children in Jersey City. Before the restaurant, he ran a showroom for a Brazilian fashion company. Her father immigrated from Brazil and her mother’s parents came from Portugal to New Jersey. (The flavors of both countries are reflected in Bossa Fish’s dishes.) In addition, his grandparents ran a restaurant in Brazil. His father also ran a Newark-based food truck and owned a restaurant in Rahway. So despite his background in fashion, Philip is no stranger to restaurants.

Restaurant

Bossa Fish can seat around 20 people inside, as well as 40 in front of the restaurant under heat lamps. Inside, “the vibe is very sleek and modern, but has elements of beautiful Portuguese artwork,” according to Philip. In fact, the word “Bossa” is an old-fashioned Brazilian slang term; it means doing something with a special charm, natural flair, or innate ability. For example, tables display wines and olive oils while hand-painted murals adorn the walls.

The “Charlie Baltimore” sandwich

Seafood is of course the star of the menu. A popular entree – and Philip’s favorite item – is the salt cod croquettes; but other popular entrees include the shrimp croquettes and the shrimp in garlic sauce. Likewise, popular sandwiches include “Charlie Baltimore” (crab cake) and “305” (with plaice, shrimp or cod). Plus, Philip says Friday’s special of the day, a grilled octopus platter, still sells. Click here to see the full menu.

Other iconic dishes include Bossa Nova, a sandwich with a choice of plaice, shrimp, scallops, cod or whiting; as well as the Bossa combo, a fried plate with shrimp, scallops and plaice. Meanwhile, mouthwatering desserts include banana pudding and custard.

The market

Bossa Fish also offers a large scale fish market. They sell shrimp, scallops, salmon, red snapper, porgy, branzino, cod, flounder and more. There are also a variety of sauces and seasonings for sale. Customers can then take their seafood home or let Bossa Kitchen cook it to their liking.

The owners of Monterey Coastal Cuisine in Carmel announced plans on Tuesday to open a partner restaurant in the Nickel Plate neighborhood of Fishers called Tiburon Coastal Cuisine.

The restaurant is scheduled to open in early fall 2022 at 8701 E. 116th in the First Internet Bank Building on the south side of 116th Street, west of the Interstate 69 interchange.

Monterey Coastal Kitchen opened in April in a 6,700 square foot space formerly occupied by Scotty’s Brewhouse on the ground floor of the Carmel’s Sophia Square building at 110 W. Main St.

Owned by former homebuilder Paul Estridge Jr. and former Kona Grill general manager Chris Thomas, Monterey Coastal offers an upscale menu including fresh seafood, sushi, steaks, sandwiches, breads dishes and more. Admission prices range from $14 to $46.

The owners said Tiburon Coastal Cuisine will offer a similar, but not identical, menu.

First Internet Bank will serve as owner for the restaurant.

“Monterey’s success, combined with First Internet Bank’s incredible location in the Nickel Plate neighborhood, spurred us on to take the next step in opening Tiburon,” Estridge said in written remarks.

ALO Property Group was listing real estate broker for Space Fishers, and Urban Space Commercial Properties served as broker for Tiburon.

Breakfast Bar by Saucy Focaccia opens Wednesday, June 9 at 1950 Blairs Ferry Rd., Suite 116, Hiawatha.

The new establishment, from the owners of two Saucy Focaccia restaurants in Cedar Rapids, joins another new restaurant at the Peck’s Landing development in Hiawatha. Paradise Indian Grill also moved there from Cedar Rapids on April 30.

The new breakfast restaurant’s menu includes an assortment of pancake and waffle options like sweet creme pancakes and fried French toast, Eggs Benedict options like Pork Belly and Rib-eye Breakfast Steak, and breakfast sandwiches. The mimosa menu includes varieties of cocktails like caramel apple, orange cream and peach.

The hours listed on the door were 7am-2pm for dining and 6am-1pm for drive-thru.

Phong Lan reopens its dining room

Phong Lan reopened its dining hall on June 1 after a long period of transportation only during the pandemic.

The Vietnamese restaurant offers a variety of popular Southeast Asian dishes, including its popular pho and spring rolls, at 216 Eighth St. SE in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Phong Lan is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

Barrel House comes to downtown Cedar Rapids

Less than two months after announcing a new Marion location, Barrel House has announced plans for a location in downtown Cedar Rapids, which will open in October.

“The upscale corner of First Avenue East and Second Street SE will be revived with traditional tavern flair, specialty cocktails and an exceptional selection of local beers on tap,” GLD Commercial Real Estate said in a press release.

The new location will occupy the 3,500 square foot space formerly occupied by La Cantina Bar & Grill.

Barrel House founder Jimmy Holt said he recognizes the effect of COVID-19 on downtown Cedar Rapids and the lack of dining options.

“We saw an opportunity to be at the forefront of the recovery and hope others will follow,” Holt said.

The Marion store will open this summer. Barrel House has locations in Davenport, Dubuque and Moline, Illinois.
